Hurricane Dean’s Fury Changes Travel Plans For Many
As Hurricane Dean continues its passage, many travelers are left wondering if their holiday plans will still be possible. Anyone with trips planned to hurricane locales like the Caribbean, Mexico, Belize etc, is encouraged to check with their country’s travel advisory board and to speak to their travel agent.
Hurricane Dean is an extremely dangerous Category 4 hurricane (out of 5) and the U.S. National Hurricane Center warns that it could strengthen to a catastrophic Category 5.
As of August 20, Hurricane Dean hit further south of Jamaica and many of the main holiday resorts experienced strong winds and rain, but not the destruction initially feared.
Many governments are now advising people to avoid Belize and anyone still in Belize is advised to move away from the coast.
There is still speculation that the Cayman Islands may also be hit, however, latest reports are suggesting that the hurricane will pass to the south of the island. Also, with the more southerly pass anticipated; Hurricane Dean may now miss the vacation regions of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula.
The latest computer models are forecasting that the hurricane will miss the U.S. Gulf Coast, but cross instead to the Yucatan to the Bay of Campeche and then hit central Mexico.
The hurricane is wreaking havoc on travelers, as flights are adjusted or cancelled.
If you are in a hurricane region, it is important to follow what your tour operator and the local authorities tell you to do. Remember that the Caribbean area is extremely prepared for Hurricanes and there are shelters and procedures in place.
