Top Ten Amazing Race Destinations Inspire Thoughts Of World Travel

With the continued popularity of The Amazing Race franchise, IndendentTraveler.com announced its top ten favorite destinations from the show’s previous season.

With literally dozens of locations around the world to choose from, the editors picked their most memorable Amazing Race destinations from each of the past ten seasons.  The race has taken teams around the world, shown the viewers some incredible scenery, and inspired thoughts in many (including me) about traveling to faraway lands.  I think this list of top destinations, one from each season, will get me thinking and planning my next exotic adventure.

Season One: Alaska, United States – Alaska’s snowy landscape is a place that most people dream of visiting.  Thoughts of dog sledding, mountain hikes and amazing vistas make this a sought after destination.

Season Two – Namibia, Africa – The endless deserts of Namibia Africa including the masses dunes like the Matterhorn are truly amazing sights to behold.  With so many other exciting things to do in Africa, everyone should take a trip once in their lifetime.

Season Three – Aberdeen Scotland – With unbelievable castles, rich history and warm people, Scotland is a beautiful place to visit.  Don’t miss out historic events featuring distinctive dress and famous bagpipe music.

Season Four – Amsterdam, Netherlands – With famous canals and wild nightlife, Amsterdam will never suffer for a shortage of tourists.  You might want to even consider renting a luxurious canal boat as your accommodation!

Season Five – Rotorua, New Zealand – With local hot springs and pools and unique surrounding land including limestone caverns, volcanic wastelands, steaming geysers and hissing pools, Rotorua, New Zealand is one of the most unique places.

Season Six – Xian, ChinaXian is well known for its famous terracotta warrior figures, with an archeological site that has to be visited to be believed.  It is known as one of the most important cities in Chinese history since it has been the capital of 13 dynasties.  Visit the well preserved City Wall of Xian along with many monasteries and you’ll get a sense of the city’s historic significance.

Season Seven - Cuzco, Peru – You could experience thrills like those that the racers did with their llama-herding, basket carrying and zip lining through the mountains of Peru.  Alternatively, you could visit the charming city square with wonderful shops and mouthwatering restaurants with charming balcony views.

Season Eight - New Orleans, Louisiana – With a visit taking place by the racers just weeks before Hurricane Katrina destroyed the area, viewers of the race enjoyed the city and French Quarter as it once was.  Locals are hoping that people will start returning to the area because the French Quarter and Jackson Square are back up and running and the city needs people to start returning.

Season Nine – Sicily, Italy – The sunny island of Sicily is worth a visit with ancient amphitheatres, medieval towns and modern day markets.  With beautiful scenery, sumptuous foods, and animated locals, you will thoroughly enjoy this drop dead gorgeous locale.

Season Ten – Hanoi, Vietnam – This location is most well known for the Hoa Lo Prison Museum (the original site of the famous Hanoi, Hilton where American POWs were held).  Beyond this historic site, Hanoi has many thrilling sites to see like Hoan Kiem Lake and the Old Quarter.

I hope these wonderful tourist destinations inspire your own travel adventure in the coming year.  Be sure to check out the great deals and packages from Virgin Vacations.
