Make Travel and Education a Great Vacation
I love to travel and as a parent of young children, I want to expose my children to the wonderful lessons that can be learned by traveling abroad. With some estimates stating that less than half of American adults have ever traveled abroad, I am saddened that more people don’t take the opportunity to see travel as an education opportunity.
The world is a beautiful and complex place. I believe that anyone returning from a trip abroad returns better prepared for life’s challenges and has a greater appreciation for all that we have in the U.S.
Here are some great ways to incorporate a little ‘learning’ into your next vacation.
• Be sure to take a tour of something historical in the area you are visiting. For example, visit some ruins, an ancient church, a historical landmark etc.
• Read up on the culture and history of your vacation destination before you go. If you have children, share that information and have them help you with the research by taking a trip to the library together.
• Arrange to volunteer in the location you are visiting. In poorer countries, they are thrilled to have an extra pair of hands to help build houses, clean up dirty waterway or to help in an orphanage.
• Plan something cultural during your trip. If you don’t usually take the time to see the ballet, listen to an orchestra or visit an art gallery, why not make that time while you are vacationing.
The world really is a magical playground for our children. Through seeing its beauty and experiencing its wonders, we help children by giving them the information, guidance and inspiration to make the right choices in their lives.
Remember that traveling with your children connects cultures together and can help them appreciate other cultures for a lifetime.
