Indulge in a South African Adventure!

Imagine blue skies…wilderness areas…sun drenched locales… it’s all possible when you visit the beautiful country of South Africa.

Want to experience the wonders of South Africa?  You can – and here is some trivia and tips to get you more familiar with this foreign yet exotic country.

  • South Africa is roughly the size of Spain and France.
  • Situated halfway between the Equator and the Antarctic, South Africa has a pleasant, temperate climate.
  • South Africa has an unbelievable range of eclectic environments.  In one trip, you can experience arid landscapes in the northwest, a forest fringed coastline, flat dry interior, manicured vineyards in the cap, and flower fields in Namaqualand!  No other country comes to mind that offers such incredible diversity.
  • Although most people think of Kenya or Namibia as the places to be for safaris, many of the wildlife parks further north are home to the Big Five of elephant, leopard, lion, buffalo, and rhino.
  • The wildlife lover can also experience the wetlands and marine reserves along the east coast that teem with vibrant birds and intriguing sea creatures.
  • The beaches of South Africa are truly spectacular, offering every water-based activity like boardsailing, swimming, surfing, fishing, scuba diving, and of course, sun-tanning!
  • Most tourists visit South Africa during their long summer months of December, January, and February.  Many South African families will head for the seaside and wildlife reserves, so be prepared for busy roads.  Rain is still common, but it arrives in the form of short, noisy thundershowers unlikely to spoil your travel plans.
  • With a rich and tumultuous history, there is no shortage of historical and cultural activities to experience.  Take the time to learn about the fascinating history of this country.
  • The principal shopping attraction is their amazing array of handcrafted goods and jewelry made from locally mined gold and inlaid with precious or semi-precious stones.  Be sure to visit the markets in the bigger centers to see the amazing South African goods.

South Africa has so much to offer.  Be sure to do your research and consult the wonderful guidebooks available to plan your own adventure.  In a future blog, I’ll give you some of my favorite spots to visit!  Happy travels!
