Discover The Hidden Gem Of Europe – Portugal!

Neatly tucked away on the other side of Spain, Portugal truly is a hidden gem of Europe.  Many start with a visit to Spain, intending to visit Portugal, but simply run out of time.  Well, after my visit there last year, I can tell you – that you must make time for Portugal!

With a population of over ten million people, I observed that the majority of Portuguese people like a slower pace of life (except when they are driving!) and they take time to savor the simple pleasures of life like fruit, flowers, fish, and wonderful food.  If you visit, here is just a brief sampling of the major attractions of this wonderful land!

  • Lagos – Always a picture perfect destination with its amazing combination of cliffs and white beaches.  If you like to party, this Algarve town is definitely a place to stop.  Consider renting a bike or moped to make your beach expeditions that much easier.
  • The Ruins of St. George’s Castle, Lisbon – St. George’s offers a classic panoramic overlook of Lisbon
  • Alfama Market, Lisbon – The Alfama market has been selling ‘stuff’ to bargain hunters for over a hundred years!  The most popular items are lace and hand painted pottery.  Check the operating hours and definitely plan a visit when you’re in the Lisbon area.
  • Institute of Port Wine, Lisbon – A great combination of comfy sofas, soft music and low lighting, this locale is a great place to chill out with old or new friends!
  • Evora – This walled town is surrounded by gorgeous fields of vineyards, olive trees and flowers.  Many visit the cathedral and Roman temple, but be sure to also visit the ossuary chapel.  This eerie site is made from thousands of human skull and bones!  It will give you the chills, I guarantee it!

So next time you’re planning your vacation to Europe, consider a stop in Portugal, which has now become one of my favorite places in Europe!  Enjoy!
