Cost Cutting In Europe – Continued – Part 4

Well, we are continuing our series on cost cutting strategies when visiting some of the most popular cities in Europe.  In part four, we discover ways to save in romantic and richly historic Rome!

Located on the Tiber River, Rome is the capital city of Italy and it is home to almost three million people.  There are many breathtaking experiences like the Vatican, the Forum, Fiat Bambino, and the Colosseum.  Rome is expensive, so you will likely need these cost saving tips!

Hotels near Termini rail station are usually the least expensive.  Be careful, some are not very reputable.  One good one to try is the Hotel Des Artistes, which has rooms from $123.  Another unique option is to seek out convents, as they are unbelievably clean, safe and a bargain.  Check out ‘coming to Rome’ at www.santasusanna.org.

For cheap eats, look for eateries along Piazza Santa Maria, where locals dine at small pizzerias and eat loads of gelati.  Another option is to go off the small alleys from Piazza Navona, where entrees at some restaurants are $10 or less!  To save money, forgo the meat course (it is the priciest) and opt for a salad and pasta.  If you love coffee, at most establishments you will save money by ordering your Cappuccino from the bar rather than the restaurant.

The Vatican Museum is usually closed on Sundays; however, it is open and free on the last Sunday of every month.  Other sites that are free on the same day include the Pantheon, the Basilica of San Giovanni in Laterno and the nearby Holy Stairs.

Opt for a three-day Roma pass, at around $27, it includes public transport, admission to two museums and discounts at others.

Be sure to buy your subway tickets at newsstands and always remember to stamp them on your way to the Metro, or face a hefty fine.  Buy train tickets at the station or through authorized TrenItalia agents who don’t charge a commission as other agents might.

For your transportation from the airport to downtown, take the twice-hourly train (only $12.66 one-way) from Termini.

If you would like a package vacation to this breathtaking and historical city, book one of Virgin Vacations great Italy packages.  A friend of mine went on their Rome Escape package from $869 this package features round trip air to Rome, four nights’ accommodations, continental breakfast daily, fuel surcharges, taxes and service charges.  The package is a great way to explore Italy’s eternal city!
