Cost Cutting In Europe – Continued – Part 3
I hope you enjoyed my Paris and Amsterdam cost cutting ideas. In part three, we explore ways to save some cash when traveling in Madrid!
Madrid is the capital and largest city in Spain. When traveling in this country, you’ll find that hotels are more like mini-hotels. For example, in Madrid a number of hotels are tucked inside the stately buildings along Gran Via. One bargain is the Hostal Alcazar Regis with rooms from $61. Bargains are also available from hostels along Calle Atocha and Plaza Santa Ana, including Hotel Miau.
For meals, your best deals are the three-course, fixed price ‘menu del dia’ available at many bars and restaurants. Typically, you’ll pay around $12 for lunch and $20 for dinner. Another option is to eat tapas at the bar – it’s much cheaper than sitting at a table in the restaurant. I also like visiting the working class neighborhood of Lavapies, which is packed with cheap – but good restaurants.
Visit the Prado museum, which is free on Sunday. The Reina Sofia is free on Saturday afternoons and on Sundays. Check out The Madrid Card (from $50.76), which includes unlimited city transportation, museum access, guided walking tours and other discounts.
Make sure you allot time to check out gorgeous El Retiro Park – it is free! Visit on weekends for the real feel because it is buzzing with locals and vendors.
For transportation, your best bet is to purchase a 10-ride Metro ticket for $7.73 (versus $15.30 for 10 individual passes). Downtown Madrid’s subway system has many close together stops, so check a map first to determine if a ride is worth it because it may be close enough to walk.
If you would like a package vacation to this gorgeous and exciting city, book one of Virgin Vacations great Spain packages. I personally enjoyed Essential Madrid, from $799; this package features round trip air, six nights’ accommodations, continental breakfast, fuel surcharges, taxes and service charges. The package is a great way to enjoy the quaint beauty and exciting culture and nightlife of this fun city!
