Cook Islands Sizzle As Romantic Hot Spot
For honeymooners or anyone looking to get away from it all, a Virgin Vacation trip to Cook Islands provides the perfect haven.
Polynesian people who migrated from nearby Tahiti, to the southeast first settled The Cook Islands in the sixth century. Today, this tropical island paradise is an idyllic vacation spot filled with friendly people and breathtaking scenery.
Last year I was fortunate enough to travel on the Essential Aitutaki package from Virgin Vacations that featured round trip airfare and five days accommodation. This remote island sits in the corner of a glistening lagoon surrounded by a handful of smaller islands called ‘motus’. For honeymooners or anyone wanting a romantic escape, Aitutaki is the perfect place.
One of my favourite memories was an island buffet of barbeque chicken, local fish, banana pudding (poke) and other tasty treats at The Blue Nun. Along with the island feast, there was an island band and dancers to keep us entertained.
We also planned a day at the Aitutaki Lagoon Resort and Spa, which sits about 40 feet across a canal. The spa was quite a treat and the rates were really reasonable. Remember that you have to get permission to cross the channel by boat – either to visit the spa or to eat at the Beach Bar.
Make sure to also book in time to take a cruise of the area. We spent the day out in the lagoon, snorkelling and visiting the little islands. Honeymoon Island is a popular spot, which was reportedly a sand dune only 35 years ago. The tradition on Honeymoon Island is for those recently wed to plant a Coconut Palm tree. What a fun way to recognize your new life together!
Snorkelling was amazing and we saw a rich array of marine life like puffers, unicorn fish and giant clams. Aitutaki is definitely a beautiful place to snorkel.
I highly recommend a trip to the Cook Islands for anyone looking to relax and rejuvenate in a tropical island setting. With crystal blue waters, white sand beaches and very friendly people, it is the perfect vacation setting!
