Breathtaking Belize
It’s been a dream of mine for the past few years to visit Belize. Still a little known tourist destination, I craved visiting somewhere that would not be exploding with tourists.
I went on Virgin Vacation’s Belize Ambergris Caye Island Beach Getaway and was not disappointed. Ambergris Caye is Belize’s largest island. The history of the island goes back to the days of the Maya, European pirates and Mexican refugees who fled during the Caste War. Today, descendants of Mexico make up most of the island’s population.
Ambergris Caye is the largest of over 200 cayes that dot the Belize coastline. It is 25 miles long and over a mile wide. Its location is idyllic in the clear shallow waters of the Caribbean Sea.
If you are a diver or like to snorkel, you won’t be disappointed because the coastline is protected by the 190 miles long Barrier Reef, the second largest living coral reef in the world. The island’s seaside is jammed with jetties and dive shops offering trips to the different dive sites. Be sure to take the time to visit this underwater spectacle – you will be amazed.
San Pedro Town is the only inhabited area on the island. Its atmosphere feels like a bustling fishing village. I loved the clustered wooden houses. There are loads of gift shops, boutiques, bars, cafes and restaurants. The people are friendly and the island feel is fantastic.
The island’s people are called ‘Sanpedranos’ and speak English, Spanish, Creole and Maya. They are proud of their heritage and are very willing to share it with tourists.
Now this isn’t just a sleepy island with no nightlife. The evenings are very social and you will find tourists and islanders at the different bars and restaurants enjoying reggae and Latin music.
If you are interested in discovering Belize, I highly encourage you to check out the Virgin Vacations packages. They have a wonderful array of hotels to choose from and you cannot beat Virgin Vacation’s service! Why not book today?
