Avoid the Post Trip Squeeze
OK—you may have read this title and wondered – “what the heck is the post trip squeeze?” Well, that is the name I gave for those weeks following a vacation when I try desperately to “squeeze” myself into my jeans and other clothing.
If you are like me, you tend to indulge when you travel. An extra glass of wine here, a cream laden pasta dish there, a piece of decadent dessert over there and viola, – before you know it – you’ve put on five to ten pounds during your time away.
I was determined during my latest trip not to let that happen. Really, nothing is more depressing than having to go on a diet after a wonderful time away. I made it my goal to maintain my weight during my vacation by following a few simple guidelines.
- Be Flexible – You won’t have the same gym or other fitness equipment that you’re used to, but you can still get a workout. Check out the hotel exercise room. If they have circuit equipment, work each machine for one set and then hop on their bike or treadmill for ten minutes. Repeat this two more times and you’ll end up with a great workout!
- Create Your Own Workout – If the hotel doesn’t have its own gym, you can still get a great workout in your room. Try jumping jacks, pushups, crunches, tricep dips, squats and lunges – you’d be surprised how much of a workout you can get without any equipment! One friend of mine always sticks a dynaband into her bag so that she can get some resistance training in as well.
- Watch Your Portion Sizes – Let’s face it, growing portion sizes are a big contributor to growing waistlines. When you order your meal, ask for a to-go box to come with your meal. When the meal arrives, immediately put half of the meal and into the box. That way, you’re left with a healthy portion and you’re not tempted to finish your plate.
Another idea is to ask if you can have a lunch size portion when you’re dining in the evening.
- Beware of Fried Foods – It can be tough, but when you’re on the road, don’t fall into the trap of greasy, fried foods. If you must visit a fast food location, many have healthier options like grilled chicken burgers and tasty salads. Opt for a healthier option and you will help keep your waistline in check.
These tips are really easy and just require a bit of discipline. You can still enjoy your vacation, just be sure to keep active, watch your portion sizes, avoid greasy and fried foods and you should come back fitting you pre-vacation clothing – no problem!
